ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 9.2 ZoneAlarm Free Firewall - Free software downloads and software reviews

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 9.2 ZoneAlarm Free Firewall - Free software downloads and software reviews
 ZoneAlarm lets you block uninitiated and unwanted traffic, even while your PC is unattended or while you're not using your connection. To further limit your exposure to attack, specify which applications can access the Internet. The program lets you stop e-mail-borne Visual Basic Script worms, too.
The changes made to improve the default firewall in Windows 7 are impressive, but the newest version of the free ZoneAlarm Firewall argues that Microsoft still has a long way to go. ZoneAlarm 9.2 introduces multiple new features to one of the world's oldest computer security programs including quieter outbound protection, behavioral detection from the ZoneAlarm Internet security suite, automatic Wi-Fi security setting activation, antiphishing protection, an overhauled ZoneAlarm toolbar, and 2GB of online storage for free.
Installation
Program installation was largely a smooth experience, taking about 5 minutes. Users will have to reboot their computers after its done. Prior users of ZoneAlarm's paid security suites might encounter some odd behavior if the uninstallation process of one of those programs left remnants, but this should be the rare exception and not the rule.

Mozilla Firefox - Free software downloads and software reviews

Firefox – The customizable web browser
Firefox is a free web browser offered by Mozilla. It’s an open source software that was derived from the Mozilla Application Suite. The newest Firefox application is Version 3 and offers much more security, speed, and features than you will ever find in Internet Explorer, which is why it’s one of the most preferred browsers of webmasters and web developers.
A more universally useful feature is that Firefox 3.6 will now automatically check to see if your plug-ins are out of date. Since many 21st-century security problems come from outdated plug-ins, this is an important fix. For example, Adobe Flash, which most of us use for Web video, has had numerous security problems fixed in the last year. With this improvement, even users who don't follow security news will be able to keep their plug-ins up to date and secure. This is a win/win situation as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see all browsers implement this feature.

It moves at lightning speed thanks to Gecko 1.9, unlike previous versions of Firefox. According to W3Schools, Firefox accounted for over the browser of choice for over ½ of Internet users. Why so much preference toward Firefox?

The new location bar
The new location bar (the URL address bar) is smart. Type in part of what you’re looking for and it’ll probably come up with the right website. This is especially true if you have visited it before or frequently do so. It even checks your bookmarks and history to see what you may be looking for. Essentially, you can search right from the location bar.

Password manager

Firefox 3 comes with your own, built-in password manager. This is a plus, because now you don’t have to keep downloading password managers if you have a lot of passwords to remember. We think that’s a pretty nifty deal. Of course, if you don’t want it to remember a login you can tell it not to. It’s entirely up to you.

Smart bookmarks
Do you frequently visit a handful of the same sites over and over? Smart bookmarks make it a snap to go directly to those sites, as well as an option to open them all at once. So, if you have to visit four websites daily for work, you can instantly open them up. There’s a little button on the favorites bar where you can access these bookmarks. It either shows most visited sites or bookmarks you’ve recently added.

New features

There's more to a browser than just fast page rendering, and Firefox 3.6 offers numerous new features that I think make it a compelling browser choice.
Users who like to tweak the look of their browser but don't want to dig into the technicalities of Firefox's XUL (XML User Interface Language) should enjoy playing with Firefox's new Personas feature. This is a one-click Web-based tool that lets you change the look and feel of your browser. You can either roll your own theme or pick one of the more than 35,000 themes that are already available. Personally, I like the plain-old Firefox theme, but if you like jazzing up your browser's looks, you'll like Personas.
This is a great browser for students or others who conduct research on the Internet. Mozilla has developed virtual sticky notes so you can add your own notes to web pages, and they will be there when you return. The Library archives your browsing history and bookmarks for easy organization.
Another nice feature is the anywhere drag and drop, which allows you to drag text or a link from anywhere on a web page and put it directly into your search bar.

Google Chrome 4.1.249.1064 - Free software downloads and software review

Google Chrome Review
Google Chrome is one of the newest browsers around, designed and created by search engine moguls, Google.It incorporates  many features of Internet Explorer and Firefox while remaining lightweight and easy on the eyes.

Installation and Setup
Chrome’s installation takes only a few seconds, although it uses quite a lot more space than you might imagine, filling up around 100mb of data after a few hours of browsing. It also installs into your AppData folder rather than program files, which is a little confusing and makes it hard to find out where the browser files end and your cache files begin.

Ease of Use

Compared to Firefox and Internet Explorer, Chrome is an incredibly lightweight browser. It doesn’t overwhelm you with options or install tons of different toolbars. On our test system it generally used around half the amount of memory to do the same tasks as Firefox, using around 35-40MB to run 5 normal pages, compared to the 60MB Firefox required. This is great news for people with older systems or anyone fed up with the clutter of the other modern browsers.

Features
The features of Chrome  aren’t all immediately apparent or original, though many are. Starting up the browser shows quick links to your most popular sites, although Opera has used this feature for years and it’s also available with the other browsers via plugins. More unique, Chrome treats each tab as an individual program, so if one single website crashes, you won’t lose everything.
Other features include a privacy mode, easier downloading without using a popup box and streamlined access to search and history functions.
Chrome has a while to go before it’s as compatible and stable as the other browsers, but if you’re looking for a simple alternative to the slower and clunkier modern browsers, Chrome is well worth checking out

CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews

CCleaner Review
CCleaner is a tool designed to reduce this effect by deleting files that you don’t need and removing invalid entries in the registry. After running CCleaner you can expect to have a faster and more reliable computer, you’ll even get more disc space!
Lets start with the developers description of CCleaner:
CCleaner doesn't support the large number of extraneous programs that some competitors do, but it can erase traces from such popular programs as Spybot - Search & Destroy and WinZip. CCleaner now offers secure file erasing along with a Registry-cleaning utility that quickly scans for invalid entries before removing them. CCleaner can even back up your Registry before removal, in case it accidentally removes a crucial component, and the download includes a rudimentary feature for uninstalling any program on your machine.

CCleaner Full Review
Temp files and similar from the following applications:
    * Internet Explorer
    * Recycle Bin
    * Clipboard
    * Windows Temporary files
    * Windows Log files
    * Recent Documents (on the Start Menu)
    * Run history (on the Start Menu)
    * Windows XP Search Assistant history
    * Windows XP old Prefetch data
    * Windows memory dumps after crashes
    * Chkdsk file fragments

Temporary files and recent file lists for the following applications:
    * Firefox
    * Opera
    * Safari
    * Media Player
    * eMule
    * Kazaa
    * Google Toolbar
    * Netscape
    * Microsoft Office
    * Nero
    * Adobe Acrobat Reader
    * WinRAR
    * WinAce
    * WinZip

You may also choose to clean:
    * Menu Order cache
    * Tray Notifications Cache
    * Window Size and Location Cache
    * User Assist history
    * IIS Log Files
    * Custom Folders

We do not recommend you choosing the last six them if you aren’t a advanced user and know what you are doing.

What we think so far:
The list is long, but running CCleaner doesn’t take a lot of time. We have also experienced that we got more disc space to play with after deleting lots of temp files, if you have used your computer for
some time it isn’t unusual that CCleaner would delete several gigabytes of crap. Remember to defrag your hard drive if this happens to you!

The registry cleaning:
CCleaner is designed from the ground to be safe and secure to use. It has
multiple levels of checks in place to ensure that it won’t delete any useful information or documents you may still need.

CCleaner is capable of cleaning the following entries from the registry:
    * File Extensions
    * ActiveX Controls
    * ClassIDs
    * ProgIDs
    * Uninstallers
    * Shared DLLs
    * Fonts
    * Help File references
    * Application Paths
    * Icons
    * Invalid Shortcuts and more…

Our Conclusion:
We have been using CCleaner for several months now, and we think that CCleaner is getting better and better by every program update. Did we mention that CCleaner got a auto update function? There is a new CCleaner release every month so remember to update CCleaner!
Cleaner is fast in use as long as you choose just to delete files, but if you choose the safe file deletion it takes much longer time, but this is normal as the files are overwritten several times. For normal users we would recommend just using the normal deletions method, but if you want your temp files to really be deleted, then go ahead, use the secure file deletion.
The registry cleaner part of CCleaner is not the best registry cleaner out there, but it’s good enough for a normal Windows user. Remember that this piece of software is free! Available in 35 different languages.

Pros:
    * Freeware
    * Easy in use
    * Fast
    * Doesn’t delete needed files/entries

Cons:
    * Not the best registry cleaner

Free GOM Player Download, GOM Player 2.1.25.5015 Download

GOM Media Player 2.1.25.5015  (6.56MB)

There are a lot of media players available, so many that one can go bonkers trying to choose the one that is the best of them all. Today, we review the GOM Player that is supposed to be one of the best media players around. Let's see if it can match the claims. The Player GOM is the kind of player all users pray to the Gods of software for. It supports all kinds of features for highly advanced users who desire to watch video clips at the best quality. It can also play one of your broken AVI files that other media players seldom play. GOM Player supports most of the codecs (AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, and more) by its own embedded codec system. The best part is, it doesn't make you scourge through a zillion web pages just to get that one codec; GOM will automatically lead you to an open-source codec web-site. It also has a registered patent for playing broken AVI format or AVI video files that are being downloaded. Advanced Playback features include VMR modes Set detail resolution, Pan and Scan, Time jump, Playback speed control, A-B repeat, and more. Overlay mixer features AVI key frame based RW/FF optimized buffer for streaming automatic ASF source filter. We'll talk more about these and other features a little later. Features explained Once you install the GOM player and run it for the first time, you encounter the configuration window where you first have to select the display mode. You can choose from Normal, High-Quality, and TV Output modes.

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.
Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out playlist can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.
More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, hot keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.
GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead.
